Job Description:
The Childcare Practitioner (Assistant) will provide support and assistance to Room Leaders in the day-to-day running of the various rooms at the Centre. The Childcare Practitioner (Assistant) will:
  • ensure a safe, clean and culturally sensitive environment for the care, learning and welfare of children;
  • proactively support each child’s potential through developmentally appropriate learning activities;
  • provide support for planning of daily activities and set up rooms accordingly;
  • provide support for the maintenance of records;
  • ensure Centre policies and procedures are implemented according to best practice;
  • maintain an optimum level of hygiene and ensure equipment is well maintained and safe to use;
  • support the coordination of regular fire drills;
  • ensure health and safety, HSE and Tusla regulations and legislation are maintained to optimum levels at all times;
  • communicate effectively with children, parents and staff and advise Room Leaders and/or Child Protection Officers of any concerns about a child;
  • participate in training and attend meetings when required;
  • carry out any other duties as required.

The Childcare Practitioner (Room Leader) is responsible for the organisation and day to day running of the room providing a stimulating and varied programme of play, and ensuring the well-being of the children. The Childcare Practitioner (Room Leader) will:
  • plan, implement and review all developmental programmes to provide for the children’s physical, emotional, social, linguistic and cognitive development and achieving other staff members’ participation;
  • formulate a daily routine for the children which offers a wide variety of play activities, but allows for flexibility as the situation / occasion / child demands.  The following should be provided at each session (depending on age group): sand, water, paint, dough / clay, books and stories, music and nature and opportunities for adventure play, manipulative play, home-corner, and outdoor play;
  • ensure all preparation is complete before the children arrive; ensuring provisions of basic play materials;
  • create a friendly relaxed atmosphere, which establishes in the children a feeling of security, confidence, and trust and be ready to welcome the children when they arrive. The Room Leader will champion this culture and mentor other staff members in the room;
  • together with the Manager, play a role in identifying special needs and planning for appropriate interventions either within the services provided or by other professional people;
  • work as part of a team;
  • liaise with the Manager in relation to purchasing, organising and maintaining of equipment and materials;
  • maintain up to date records in adherence to Pre-school regulations 2006;
  • provide weekly records for the Manager;
  • together with the Manager, organise and implement staff appraisals;
  • ensure Centre policies and procedures are implemented according to best practice;
  • maintain an optimum level of hygiene and ensure equipment is well maintained and safe to use;
  • support the coordination of regular fire drills;
  • ensure health and safety, HSE and Tusla regulations and legislation are maintained to optimum levels at all times;
