“Áine Kelly has almost 20 years’ experience of working as an SLT in the West of Ireland. She is passionate about making her work child and family centred and supporting children to become the most effective communicators they can be. Working exclusively in the specialist area of Early Intervention Services for the last 10 years or so, Áine has also worked with children from birth right up until 18 years of age and also within the adult services. Getting to work with children in their own homes, preschools and schools is as important, if not more so, than working with children in the clinical setting. It allows Áine to see the children in their everyday natural settings. This also allows Áine to meet the important people in the child’s life, their parent/s, their siblings, grandparents, childminders, preschool and school staff and together look at what the child’s specific communication, language and/or speech goals are and how to explore developing these goals within each routine and daily activity of the child’s life. Áine works very closely with members of the Early Intervention Team, Psychologists, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Specialist Nurses and Preschool Liaison Teachers, Social Workers and Paediatricians. Together the team endeavour to support each child and family as uniquely as needed. Getting to give SLT training to parents, preschool and school staff is a large part of Áine’s work as it supports the development of the communication skills of the child’s communication partners. It also allows the parents and staff to meet other parents/staff members who might be in similar situations as themselves and this can be a great support for everyone involved. Áine is also committed and passionate about supporting Speech and Language Therapists in Training in both the SLT undergraduate course in NUIG and the SLT Master’s course in UL.”
