Seminar and Website Launch 24th of March‘Time and Space’ was the theme for a seminar hosted by Galway Childcare Committee on Saturday 24th March at NUI Galway.
The seminar focused on the child’s voice and choice in influencing their environment for outdoor play and for making snack and meal times a more social occasion.
Practitioners from the early years profession in childcare services in Galway showcased reflections on their practice following a 3-month project exploring best practice and making innovative changes in the areas of outdoor play and mealtimes.
Galway Childcare Committee was also delighted to welcome keynote speakers including Elizabeth Wood, Professor of Education at the University of Sheffield, who acts as a policy and practice advisor to Governments, including Ireland, on Play, Curriculum, Pedagogy and Assessment. Also presenting were Dr Sheila Garrity, Academic Coordinator, BA and MA, Early Childhood Studies, and Dr Colette Kelly, Director of the Health Promotion Research Centre, which is a WHO Collaborating Centre for Health Promotion Research Centre, both from NUI Galway.A presentation was also provided by Dr Maresa Duignan, Assistant Chief Inspector in the Dept of Education and Skills with responsibility for Early Years Education Inspections.
The seminar was the culmination of a 3-month project, funded by Healthy Ireland, through the Children and Young People’s Services Committee, in conjunction with Galway City Partnership.
- Key messages from the project centred on improving children’s experiences of outdoor play and enjoyable sociable mealtime experiences.
